The New Twitter and what it means for you

September 14, 2010

Twitter said it best, “Life doesn’t always fit into 140 characters or less”. The new Twitter.com will allow your “overflow” to be seen. Our Daily Reports often feature articles addressing the importance of using multimedia tools such as YouTube and live-stream videos for your campaign or organization. The new Twitter will allow for instantaneous viewing of your multimedia posts. Some of our RootsHQ clients have expressed their preference to update their Facebook Page versus their Twitter account because they believe more information is accessible on Facebook. This is no longer the case.

The new Twitter will now allow you to embed video and pictures thanks to multimedia partnerships with DailyBooth, deviantART, Etsy, Flickr, Justin.TV, Kickstarter, Kiva, Photozou, Plixi, Twitgoo, TwitPic, TwitVid, USTREAM, Vimeo, yfrog, and YouTube. You will no longer have to follow a link away from Twitter to view posted videos or pictures. You can also view related conversations about a topic just by clicking on a Tweet. Below is a screen shot of what the new Twitter layout will look like for those still using the older version.

Twitter product manager Josh Elman said Twitter will actually be more like Google than Facebook. Twitter will be a place for quick information rather than a place where people interact and engage for long periods of time. This is important to note because with the new Twitter your followers do not have to leave the application to view your posted content. Your message will reach your followers faster than ever before.

So what does all of this mean for you and your organization? Why should you care that a new version of Twitter exists? This new version of Twitter enhances your interaction with supporters. The ability to view multimedia messages instantly allows for your videos or pictures to be passed on and viewed even faster than before. The ability to view related conversations from a Tweet will allow those who are curious about your message to view more about you. What is most important is your ability to address your followers faster and in more detail than ever before.
